Michaelmas Term 2019

The Newcomers' Club welcomes partners of visiting scholars, of graduate students and of newly appointed academic and administrative members of the University. It is run entirely by volunteers. We give our time to make your stay in Oxford enjoyable and help you to make new friends.

Tickets are required for all events.

Always let the Booking Secretary know if you cannot attend (newcomersbookings@gmail.com).

Last-minute cancellations should be made to the Tour Leader.

No refunds are available.

EVENTS FOR MICHAELMAS TERM 2020

3.00 pm - 5.00 pm

A welcome party will be held in the University Club (OX1 3SZ) for all those new to Oxford along with their spouses/partners and children. This is a social occasion to meet other newcomers and members of the committee. Although there is no charge for this event please book if you would like to attend at the coffee mornings on Wednesday 9 and 16 October.

1.30 pm - 3.00 pm

A guided walking tour led by Marie Ruiz, an Oxford City guide, lasting approximately 90 minutes, and usually including a college.

Meet outside the Museum of the History of Science, Broad Street at 1.25 pm

Cost: £6.00

11.00 am - 12.30 pm

A guided visit to the Western Print Room of the Ashmolean Museum led by its very own curator Dr Caroline Palmer who will show the group original drawings by Michelangelo and Raphael, part of the Ashmolean Museum Collection, and other highlights.

Meet at the main entrance to Ashmolean Museum at 10.50 am

Cost: £6.00

10.00 am - 12.30 pm

This is a walking tour around St Giles to learn about the interesting places in this busy street and will include short visits to the Blackfriars Priory, the Quakers Meeting Room and St Giles Church. There is the option to go for lunch in the Eagle and Child Pub afterwards.

Meet at Martyrs’ Memorial opposite Randolph Hotel at 10.00 am

ST LUKE’S CHAPEL Woodstock Road (OX2 6HT)

10.30 am - 12.30 pm

Please invite your friends along to this wonderful fair which replaces the usual coffee morning. You can buy delicious homemade cakes, unique craft gifts and other presents at various stalls. There will be a raffle with lovely prizes and the Newcomers’ Club choir will perform some Christmas songs. Come and support our main fundraising event.

No booking required.

St Columba’s Church, Alfred Street (off High Street) OX1 4EH

5.00 pm - 7.00 pm

Newcomers and their families are invited to this Christmas celebration in the city centre church of St Columba’s. Christmas crackers, a welcome drink and festive nibbles are included in the ticket price. There will also be carols and Christmas songs from the choir.

Cost: Adults £5, children ages 3-16 £4.

Tickets are only on sale at the coffee mornings, NOT online.

BOOKING FOR EVENTS

Bookings can be made from 15 January. An email with instructions will be sent at the start of the Term. Only registered members of the Newcomers’ Club may buy tickets. All tours are limited to 14 Newcomers unless otherwise stated.

If you have a baby or small child whom you would like to bring along, please discuss with Programme or Booking Secretaries whether the tour is suitable.
