The Oxford University Newcomers' Club is run by volunteers whose aim is to help the newly-arrived partners of visiting scholars, of graduate students and of newly appointed academic and administrative members of the University to settle in and to provide an opportunity to meet people in Oxford.

We are sorry that we cannot offer membership to those outside these groups but if you are looking for a community in which to make friends we hope that the suggestions here will help.

Due to the possible threat of spreading Covid-19 among our members, and following Government guidelines, we have cancelled all our face-to-face meetings. However, we are holding weekly virtual meetings throughout the summer to which all members are invited. Virtual meetings for our English conversation group and book group are also continuing. Information about these events is made available through our Meetups email group.

Our online communication platforms remain open so, if you would like to join the Club, please contact us by email. If you wish, we can then arrange to chat on the phone or in a Zoom meeting.

For general information about advice from the University of Oxford and the measures it has put in place during this period please refer to the relevant page on the University's website.

Our Organised Activities

We support several special interest Groups and also organise a programme of events each term which are listed in the calendar on the Events page.

Wednesday Coffee Mornings

Our Wednesday coffee mornings run from the week before the University term starts to the week after the University term ends and are where Newcomers come to chat, drink coffee and to make bookings for our organised events. We meet at the University Club (11 Mansfield Road, Oxford, OX1 3SZ) from 10.30 until 12.00. During vacations, informal get-togethers continue most Wednesday mornings.

Dates of the coffee mornings during the academic year 2020-2021
Michaelmas Term: from 7th October to 9th December
Hilary Term: from 13th January to 17th March
Trinity Term: from 21st April to 23rd June

"Pay and Display" parking is available in Mansfield Road but it is expensive and places are not always easy to find.

Meetups

We run an emailing network, "Meetups", for Newcomers to stay in contact with others in the Club. It is useful for sharing information, advertising activities which may be of general interest, asking others for advice and selling unwanted items. This is currently our main channel of communication for our members so please ensure that you ask to join the Meetups Group when you register with us.

Membership

Membership is free. Currently, it is not possible for prospective members to register in person at the Wednesday morning meetings so, if you think you are eligible and would like to join, please fill in the registration form that you can download here, and send a copy of it to the email address at the top of this page.

"May The Flowers Bloom..."

Across continents and through time, flowers have spoken to us of love, faith, courage and remembrance. When the UK Lockdown began, Harsha Wilkinson, OUNC Welcome officer, reached out to Newcomer members to share favourite blooms or floral emblems from their homelands, using these to honour everyone affected by the pandemic, from health workers and key workers to those sadly bereaved. With the aid of Bonny Jennings and Sue Morris she created a Floral Tribute which you can view here.

We thank Harsha for her commitment to this project.

We very much look forward to meeting you and hope to make your stay in Oxford an enjoyable one.
