The University of Oxford Newcomers' Club is an organisation, run by volunteers, whose aim is to help the newly-arrived wives, husbands or partners of visiting scholars, of graduate students and of newly appointed academic and administrative members of the University to settle in and to give them the opportunity to meet people in Oxford.
We are sorry that we cannot offer membership to those outside these groups but if you are looking for a community in which to make friends we hope that the suggestions here will help.
Wednesday Coffee Mornings
Our main weekly social event is held every Wednesday morning during the University term (and the week before term begins and the week after term ends) to chat, drink coffee and make bookings for events we have organised. We meet at the University Club (11 Mansfield Road, Oxford, OX1 3SZ) from 10.30 until 12.00. Informal get-togethers also continue most Wednesday mornings during vacations.
Please note: the University Club is closing on 27th August for several weeks for redecoration and some refurbishment. We will continue to meet on 29th August, 5th, 12th and 19th September in St Luke’s Chapel in the Radcliffe Infirmary Quarter (next to the Andrew Wiles Building/the Maths Institute) on Woodstock Road. More information about the Chapel can be found here.
Dates of the coffee mornings during the academic year 2018-2019
Michaelmas Term: from 3rd October to 5th December
Hilary Term: from 9th January to 13th March
Trinity Term: from 24th April to 26th June
"Pay and Display" parking is available in Mansfield Road but it is expensive and places are not always easy to find.
In addition to the Wednesday social mornings, we support several special interest Groups, to which members are warmly invited to attend and each term we organise visits to places of interest within and near Oxford. All these events and other social gatherings are listed on the Newcomers' Calendar on the Events page.
An additional way to help you make contact with others is via "Meetups" - a joint email list run by the Newcomers' Club which you can join after you have registered. It can be used to find others who share your interests, who might like to attend activities with you, to ask others for advice and to share information about events which may be of general interest.
Membership is free but prospective members are required to register in person at the Wednesday morning meetings between 10.30 and 12.00. If you prefer, you can download the registration form here and fill it in at home before bringing it with you on your first visit.
